NOTE 1.—The grants in respect of Main Road Upkeep represent 40% recoupment of approved provision by the County Council for Main Road Upkeep. The figure for 1961-62 is an estimate.

NOTE 2.—In the years 1956-57, 1959-60 and 1960-61 part of the Main Road Improvement Grant was transferred to county roads, in accordance with general conditions laid down by the Department. The transferred amounts were 1956-57, £36,096; 1959-60, £18,950; 1960-61, £7,580.

NOTE 3.—The grants in respect of Tourist Roads are in accordance with an eight year programme initiated in 1953-54 for Gaeltacht and congested areas, and continued for 1961-62.

NOTE 4.—The Bridge Grants were in respect of Claregalway and Hearnsbrook Bridges and additional to an earlier grant of £4,500 allocated in 1954-55 for Claregalway Bridge.

NOTE 5.—The grants for roads in Fíor Ghaeltacht areas are administered by Roinn na Gaeltachta. The Department of Local Government deals with the technical details of the road works.

NOTE 6.—The supplementary allocation of £25,000 for improvement works in 1955-56 enabled the County Council to carry out additional works on either main or county roads. The £13,000 supplementary grant in 1957-58, out of the National Development Fund, was in respect of the Screeb-Maam Cross Road leading to a turf burning electricity generating station and was in addition to a grant of £7,500 for this purpose in 1954-55.

NOTE 7.—Grants under the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote are made by the Employment and Emergency Schemes Office each year. The figures shown represent the amounts devoted to road works out of the annual allocations. The grant for 1961-62 will not be known until later on.
