Written Answers. - Manually-operated Telephone Exchanges.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give particulars of manually-operated telephone exchanges on 31st March, 1961, and during 1961-62, respectively, in the form of a reply of 6th April, 1960.

The information required by the Deputy is as follows:—

(1) The number of exchanges at present operated on a manual basis is 915.

(2) The necessary equipment has been ordered for the conversion of the undermentioned manual exchanges to automatic working. Delivery of the equipment is now expected in the latter half of this year. Installation will be spread over about 18 months from the date of delivery. It is not possible, at this stage, to say definitely which exchanges or how many will be converted in 1961-62.

Balbriggan Area: Balbriggan, Naul, Stamullen.

Ballyshannon Area: Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Cloghere, Kinlough, Pettigo, Rossnowlagh.

Croom Area: Croom, Fedamore, Granagh, Meanus.

Curragh Area: Curragh Camp, Droichead Nua, Brannockstown, Calverstown, Colbinstown, Donard, Dunlavin, Kilcullen.

Kildare Area: Monasterevan, Nurney, Rathangan.

Kinsale Area: Kinsale, Ballina-clashet, Ballinspittle, Riverstick.

Midleton Area: Midleton, Ballin-currig, Ballycotton, Castlemartyr, Cloyne, Dungourney, Guileen, Whitegate.

New Ross Area: New Ross, Ballynabola, Ballywilliam, St. Mullins, The Rower, Tullogher.

Roscommon Area: Roscommon, Athleague, Ballyforan, Ballygar, Creggs, Donamon, Four Roads, Fuerty, Lecarrow.

Tuam Area: Tuam, Ballyglunin, Barnaderg, Clonbern, Dunmore, Headford, Kilconly, Kilmaine, Milltown, Shrule.

Waterford Area: Kilmeaden.
