Vol. 188 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Estuary Free Port.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if there have been any further developments regarding the proposals to establish a free port in the Shannon estuary.

In reply to a similar question I indicated on 23rd March, 1960, that outline proposals which had then been published by the Shannon Estuary Company had been submitted to me and were under examination. The proposals envisaged the grant of exceptional facilities and concessions to enable the company to pursue their ideas for the establishment of a harbour in the estuary as the basis for the possible creation there of an industrial estate. Following preliminary consideration of the proposals by the Government, they were examined together with other information submitted by the company by an Inter-Departmental Committee on which representatives of the Departments of Industry and Commerce, Finance, Local Government and my Department were represented. The Committee met the representatives on a number of occasions and discussed their proposals fully with them.

Following consideration of the Report of the Inter-Departmental Committee the Company were informed by the Minister for Industry and Commerce on 9th March 1961, of the Government's decision on their proposals.

In their reply the Government made it clear that they would require further information in regard to the practicabilities of the proposals before they could take any further steps.
