Vol. 188 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballymoe (Galway) Garda Station.

8.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the Garda station at Ballymoe, County Galway, is to be reduced to a one man station; and, if so, if in view of the importance of the area he will consider maintaining the present strength in that station.

On the recommendation of the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, I have approved of an arrangement whereby portions of this sub-district will be transferred to the adjoining sub-districts of Ballintubber. Williamstown, Glenamady and Creggs leaving the remainder to be supervised by a resident Garda who will, if necessary, have the assistance of the station party attached to Ballintubber.

The Commissioner has informed me that these arangements will not involve any loss of police efficiency and in the circumstances I am not prepared to alter the decision taken in the matter.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary state by what amount is the area covered by the former Garda Station being reduced?

By approximately half.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary state what will happen to the present house where the barracks are situated, in view of the historical association it has with one of the 1916 leaders?

The existing premises are considered suitable for occupation by a resident married Garda and will be retained as such.
