Vol. 189 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Forestry Work.

40.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that a commonage at Coomshanna, Cahirciveen Centre, County Kerry, has been acquired for planting; and if in order to relieve unemployment in that area he will now put into operation the preliminary work such as draining, fencing and making fire-breaks in preparation for the planting later.

The area in question is at present held as part of the plantable reserve at Cahirciveen forest. It is not scheduled for planting this year.

Why is it not scheduled for planting this year?

In the first place, the Coomshanna lands are isolated. They are at least 15 miles from the main forestry centre. Secondly, the programme of work undertaken at the forest this year is at the highest possible level. In the circumstances, it would not be possible for the forester to supervise a larger planting programme in that area.

Would it be possible next year?

I cannot tell the Deputy. There is a possibility that part of the plantable reserve will be planted next year.
