Vol. 190 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shanahan Prosecution.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance what fees were paid to lawyers employed by the State to prosecute Mrs. Diana Shanahan between 27th May, 1960, and 15th February, 1961.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance what fees were paid to lawyers employed by the State to prosecute Mrs. Diana Shanahan between 28th March, 1961 and 2nd June, 1961.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions 11 and 12 together.

It has never been the practice to give details of fees paid to counsel acting on behalf of the State in individual cases. I do not consider that it would be in the public interest to give information of this kind.

13.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Finance the total cost to the State of re-instituting proceedings against Mrs. Shanahan, after a District Justice had refused informations in the District Court, in the case in which the High Court decided against the Attorney General and awarded costs against the Attorney General and the People.

It is not possible yet to estimate the total cost.

Will we ever be told?

As soon as we get the bill.

Does the Minister agree this is a most unnecessary, mean and malicious case as well as being a costly one, no matter what it costs, in the circumstances and that it is typical of the Attorney General?

And not the only case.
