Vol. 191 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Liquor Licences.

12.

asked the Minister for Justice whether in the interests of road safety, and in accordance with modern road planning, the Government will ensure that no new licences to sell alcoholic liquor, other than in licensed premises already in existence, will be granted to premises abutting or adjoining existing arterial roads or those which are planned.

The grant of intoxicating liquor licences is a matter for the Courts.

The grounds on which objections may be made are set out in Section 4 of the Licensing (Ireland) Act, 1833 and they include objection in relation to the "unfitness or inconvenience of the house or place." The persons who may object include any inhabitant of the parish in which the premises is situate.

The question of objections being taken on police grounds is one for consideration in relation to each individual application at the appropriate time.
