Vol. 191 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Demersal Fish: Exports to Britain.

18.

asked the Minister for Lands the quantity and value of demersal fish exported to Britain since the removal of the 10 per cent. duty imposed by the 1938 Trade Agreement.

There was no question of imposition of duty on fish by the Trade Agreement of 1938. On the contrary, a customs duty of 10 per cent. which applied to fish consigned to Great Britain was removed by that Agreement. In the case of direct landings into Britain from the fishing grounds, however, the duty was not removed until 1st January, 1959. I presume the Deputy is seeking particulars of these direct landings by Irish boats since that date. No arrangements have been made to compile such statistics but I may say that I do not think the quantities would have been substantial.
