Vol. 191 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Delays in Dublin Telephone Services.

19.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the considerable delay experienced by persons phoning the Supervisor in the Dublin area; and if he will take remedial action in the matter.

The average time taken to answer calls to Supervisor (31) at Dublin Exchange in recent weeks has been around 10 seconds. During certain very busy periods particularly on some days when cables were out of order longer delays were unavoidable. I can assure the Deputy that everything possible is being done to keep such delays to a minimum.

Can the Minister say why cables are going out of order so frequently?

I suppose they get broken.

I thought they were all laid underground?

So they are, but heavy lorries crack them and they break.

They seem to be breaking an awful lot lately.
