Vol. 191 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Farm Safety Legislation.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if any representations have been addressed to his Department by trade unions regarding the need for farm safety legislation; and, if so, if he will state when any such representations were made, and their nature; and if any decision has been made by the Government on the necessity for farm safety legislation having regard to the large number of farm accidents and, in particular, tractor and farm machinery accidents.

In October, 1957, trade union representations were made to the then Minister for Agriculture for the introduction of legislation corresponding to two British statutes, namely the Agriculture (Poisonous Substances) Act, 1952, and the Agriculture (Safety, Health and Welfare Provisions) Act, 1956.

As regards farm accidents arising from the use of poisonous substances, I would refer the Deputy to the Poisons Act, 1961, which was enacted on 24th May, 1961. I have no evidence which would lead me to believe that it would be possible, in our particular circumstances, to formulate legislation which would be effective in reducing substantially the number of other forms of farm accidents in this country.
