Vol. 191 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Galway Holdings.

48.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have instituted any proceedings for the acquisition of the holding of the representatives of Mr. Francis McDermott, Tobinstown, Record No. S.22064, County Galway; and if he will state the present position.

50.

asked the Minister for Lands what steps have been taken by the Land Commission for the acquisition of the holding of the representatives of Mr. Stephen Dooley at Sunhill and Tawnaghbaun, Record No. S.21692, County Galway.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 48 and 50 together.

Proceedings have been instituted by the Land Commission for acquisition of these two holdings but, pending disposal of an objection by the owner in each case, it is not possible to indicate what the outcome will be.

49.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have under consideration the propriety of the acquisition of the holding of the representatives of Mr. Michael McGuire, Ballyhard, Record No. 22059, County Galway.

The Land Commission have moved for the acquisition of these lands, comprising about 32 acres, but the proceedings are still in the early stages.

51.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state as regards (a) land and (b) turbary the number of acres in the possession of the Land Commission in County Galway, and the proposals of the Land Commission regarding them for the present financial year.

At 31st March last— the latest date for which statistics are available—the Land Commission had on hands, in Co. Galway, approximately 3,180 acres of arable land, together with some 11,000 acres of turbary, a substantial portion of which consisted of unallotted residues of Congested Districts Board estates.

The Deputy will appreciate, of course, that the position regarding lands in the possession of the Land Commission is subject to constant fluctuation, depending on progress on intake and allotment of land.

In County Galway, during the past four years, a total area of upwards of 34,000 acres has been allotted by the Land Commission amongst some 1,700 allottees.
