Vol. 192 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Blue Card System.

30.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware of the widespread dissatisfaction which exists in Dublin with the blue card system of health service; and, if so, what plans the Government have to alleviate the position.

I presume that the Deputy's reference to "the blue card system of health service" is to the dispensary medical service. I am not aware that there is widespread dissatisfaction in Dublin with this service. Considering the number of persons availing themselves of the service in Dublin relatively very few complaints are received by the health authority and by my Department.

While the position is as I have stated, the Deputy will observe from the Order Paper that I am proposing that the operation of this and other health services should be examined by a Select Committee of the House.

The fact that the Minister has a motion on the Order Paper is indicative of his appreciation of some element of dissatisfaction. Arising out of his reference to his motion, can he now say when it will be taken? Will it be within the lifetime of this Dáil? I have seen motions put down by the Taoiseach ornamenting the Order Paper during the lifetime of two Dála.

The Deputy, too, has been active in ornamenting the Order Paper. No doubt it can be arranged by the Deputy that my motion can be taken up at an early date.

Surely the Minister is not suggesting he would like to intrude on Private Members' time to take Government business.

This is an amendment to a Private Member's motion. It is a matter for arrangement between the Whips.
