Vol. 192 No. 2

National Loan, 1961. - Business of Dail.

Before we go on to Questions I should like to draw to the attention of the House the fact that there is a very large number of questions listed. Under the Rules of the House only one hour may be allowed for Questions today and I think it would be generally regarded as desirable that we should agree to suspend that Rule so that two hours may be given to Questions today, the balance of them to be taken tomorrow. Subject to the progress we make today it may be desirable to order Questions at 2 p.m. tomorrow instead of 3 p.m.

We agree with the proposal suggested by the Taoiseach that two hours be given to Questions today if that is acceptable to the House. The Taoiseach suggests that Questions should be taken at 2 p.m. tomorrow instead of 3 p.m.

All questions will be dealt with tomorrow no matter how many.

I think the normal practice is to take them at 3 p.m. If the Taoiseach would leave that proposal until we see what agreement we can reach having devoted two hours to Questions today——

The Whips can discuss the matter when we see what progress is made today.

It is agreed to devote two hours to Questions to-day. May I direct the attention of Members to the fact that, though the time for Questions is extended to two hours, there is an abnormally high number of Questions to be disposed of in that period. I would therefore request Members to be as economical as possible in their use of supplementary questions. Standing Orders provide that the Chair may determine the number of supplementaries but the Chair at all times prefers Members to restrict themselves.
