Vol. 192 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage in County Galway

62.

Mr. Donnellan

asked the Minister for Finance if he is yet in a position to state whether the drainage of the Glenamaddy Lake will be carried out under the Corrib-Clare Catchment Drainage Scheme; whether the lake at Cashel, Glenamaddy, will be drained under the scheme; if the survey of the Corrib-Mask-Black River Drainage Scheme has been put in hands; and, if so, when he expects that work will commence; when he expects work will commence on the Killimore, County Galway, Drainage Scheme; what was the date on which it was decided to have the Scheme put under survey; what area of land and bogs the scheme will relieve from flooding; what length of time it will take to carry it out; and what is the total cost of the scheme.

Reports of the engineering investigation of the Glenamaddy Lake and Cashel areas have been received, and are now being studied by the Commissioners of Public Works. Decisions will be taken shortly, and communicated to the Deputy.

The survey of the Corrib-Mask catchment, which includes the Black River, has been commenced, but I cannot say at this stage when works may start.

The Commissioners hope to commence work on the Killimor Scheme next Spring. The decision to survey this catchment was taken in July, 1957. The proposed scheme will benefit 12,650 acres of land at a cost of £750,000, and will take about four years to complete.

Mr. Donnellan

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state when the survey of the Black River was commenced?

The Black River is part of the Corrib-Mask.

Mr. Donnellan

That is right.

That has commenced.

Mr. Donnellan

When did the survey of that portion of it commence?

Mr. Donnellan

Questions are not bad after all. It was promised six months ago. I am sorry Deputy J. Brennan is not here.

I shall qualify that point. A promise was given by my predecessor, Deputy J. Brennan, on 19th May, 1960, to a deputation, which included Deputy Donnellan and there is a careful record of what my predecessor promised. He stated that he would do his utmost to have a survey staff working in the area before the end of 1961. We are not yet at the end of 1961.

Mr. Donnellan

There was nothing done until my question came in two weeks ago.

The more questions you ask——
