Vol. 192 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of North Dublin Rivers.

68.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate the approximate cost of drainage work carried out to date on the Broad-meadow River, near Swords, County Dublin; the number of persons employed in each category of worker; and the rate of weekly wages being paid to the labourers on the scheme.

Expenditure on the Broadmeadow and Ward Drainage Scheme up to the 31st October, 1961, was approximately £14,000. A foreman, storekeeper, stores assistant, carpenter, fitter, driller, 3 pump attendants, 8 gangers, 10 drivers, 26 labourers, 1 boy labourer and 1 night-watchman are employed on the scheme. A rate of £6 10s. 0d. for a 48-hour week is paid to the labourers.

69.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take steps to have drainage schemes prepared for the Kinsealy and Portmarnock Rivers owing to damage caused by flooding from both rivers.

These rivers have been noted in connection with the arrangements for intermediate drainage and will be considered with other rivers when further selections of catchments are being made.

70.

asked the Minister for Finance what steps have been taken to prepare a drainage scheme for the Matt River, near Balbriggan, County Dublin; what the estimated cost is; and what is the proposed commencement date.

An engineering survey of this catchment has been made and a scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, is in preparation. It is hoped to have tenders for carrying out the works invited next year and, accordingly, at this stage I cannot give the estimate of cost.

71.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement regarding plans for the drainage of the Tolka River, County Dublin, owing to extensive flooding which occurs at times of heavy rainfall; and if he will indicate the approximate date of completion and the estimated cost.

The Tolka catchment area will be considered by the Commissioners of Public Works for a scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945 but as it is No. 27 on the accepted priority list of minor catchment areas it will be some time before it can be reached in the arterial drainage programme.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary give the date on which the priority list was published in the Dáil Reports? It was published I know.

The priority reports for minor catchment areas, is that what the Deputy means? I cannot give it.
