andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach what is the average national income per head of population (a) in the State and (b) in each of the member countries of the Common Market.

The latest year for which the information requested is available is 1959. In that year the national income per head of population in the State and in each of the member countries of the Common Market, expressed in pounds at official exchange rates, was as follows:—

These figures are based on definitions in the System of National Accounts and Supporting Tables of the United Nations. The Irish figure differs slightly from the value which can be derived from official statistics.
