Vol. 192 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary School Capitation Grants.

148.

asked the Minister for Education whether in view of the fact that the capitation grant for secondary school pupils has risen by only £4 per annum since 1926, and in view of the great disparity at present existing between the State's contribution to the education of secondary school pupils and that of vocational school pupils, he will consider raising the capitation grant for secondary school pupils to at least £20 per annum.

I am having an examination made of the position relating to the payment of grants to secondary schools, including the basis on which such grants are paid.

I must, however, point out that no valid comparison can be made between the financing of secondary and that of vocational schools, as the principles underlying the foundation of these two types of school are entirely different.

I must, also, point out that since 1926 the rates of incremental salary payable to secondary teachers here have increased approximately four-fold and that this entire increase has been borne by the State.

I might add that since 1926 the State's total contribution to secondary education has increased from £261,535 in that year to £2,863,450 in the current year.
