Vol. 192 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City and Suburban Bus Profits.

30.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the amount of profit earned by Dublin City and suburban bus services in the last financial year; whether any profit accrued during the same period through the operation of provincial rail and bus services; and, if so, how much.

The information sought by the Deputy is not shown separately in the accounts of C.I.E. furnished to me in accordance with Section 34 of the Transport Act, 1950. It would be open to the Deputy to address his inquiries to C.I.E.

I would point out that C.I.E. is under a statutory obligation so to conduct its undertaking as a whole that, not later than 31st March, 1964, its expenditure shall not be greater than its revenue.

Is the Minister aware that his reply is just one other indication similar to many we have had down the years that C.I.E. are in the position of being answerable, apparently, to nobody but themselves so far as their charges and profits are concerned?

That is a separate question.
