asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (a) the number of new industries started in this country since 1950, (b) whether the source of investment is Irish or foreign, (c) the number of (i) Irish people and (ii) foreigners employed in these industries and (d) the number of such industries which have ceased to operate and the number of people disemployed as a result.

The number of new industries and extensions to existing industries which came to notice as having commenced production in the period from 1st January, 1950, to 30th September, 1961, is 997. There may, of course, have been others of which there is no official record.

Of the 997 new industries and extensions, 585 commenced production in the period from 1st January, 1955, to 30th September, 1961. In that period the number of projects in which there was external participation was 127. Similar information is not available in respect of the period prior to 1st January, 1955. The information sought at (c) and (d) of the question is not available.
