Vol. 192 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Booklet on Traffic Regulations.

62.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider making a booklet available to the general public outlining in simple terms the new traffic regulations contained in the recent Road Traffic Act.

I have given full publicity to the sections of the Act (64 complete sections and parts of two others) brought into operation on 1st October and I should like to pay tribute to the Press and to Radio Éireann for their public spirited co-operation.

According as further provisions of the Act are brought into force, and regulations made under those provisions, a sustained programme of publicity by press, radio (and television, when available) will deal with these provisions.

The Rules of the Road, the basic publication on road safety, will be revised from time to time to take account of the changes effected by and under the new Act and such a revision is at present in course of preparation.

Other measures of road safety publicity, which deal not merely with the law on the subject but also with the various rules for good road behaviour which cannot be enshrined in any law, will of course take account of the provisions of the 1961 Act as they come into operation.

I do not think that it would be wise to issue a booklet dealing comprehensively with the 1961 Act, until all important provisions of the Act have been brought into force.
