Vol. 192 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Turf in Offaly Area.

93.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that persons in Clonbullogue, County Offaly, have been informed by the Gardaí that they cannot have their turf taken from the local bogs to their homes in a trailer by a contractor with an £8 tax disc; that in this area turf was always transported to the local residents and even to the local Garda Station in a tractor with an £8 tax disc; and if he will take steps to ensure that this practice will be continued, as it will cause grave hardships on the general public if they cannot have their turf safely taken home.

I am aware that persons in Clonbullogue, County Offaly, have recently been informed that turf cannot be hauled for reward on a tractor taxed at the rate of £8 per annum. I am not aware that it was the practice to have turf hauled as indicated. I do not accept the suggestions in the latter part of the Deputy's question.
