Vol. 192 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Pollution by Diesel Fumes.

98.

asked the Minister for Local Government what progress has been made in the examination of various aspects of air pollution referred to by him in a reply of 4th July last; and whether he will consider following the practice of other countries in making the emission of black diesel fumes an offence punishable by law.

Testing of the atmosphere for air pollution is being continued at a number of centres throughout the country. It will be some time, however, before the extent and nature of the problem can be established. In the meantime there are certain existing powers of control over the emission of smoke or visible vapours from mechanically propelled vehicles on roads. Steps will be taken to extend those powers if this is found to be necessary.
