Vol. 192 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emyvale (Monaghan) Water Supply Scheme.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government when the Emy-vale Water Supply Scheme will be installed.

Revised contract documents for this scheme were received in my Department on 17th instant and are at present being examined by the Department's technical advisers. I am not in a position to say when the scheme will be in operation.

Is the Minister aware that eight or nine months ago we were informed that the scheme had been approved and would shortly be put in hands?

What I can tell the Deputy is what he is already aware of, that this scheme was approved in principle as far back as 1953 and there has been a succession of breakdowns. The progress we had hoped for has not since materialised and, in fact, I am afraid the position reached does not give any great hope for any immediate commencement of work. The best I can do, and what I intend doing, is to hold a conference between the people in my Department and the local authority representatives on this matter because it is not right even now.

Is it due to some defect in the plans submitted by the local authority?

Can I get an assurance that in view of the special circumstances of this town, the Minister will take any steps he can to expedite a resolution of the problem which is holding up the scheme?

I am having that done.

Question No. 39 postponed.
