Vol. 192 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unmillable Wheat.

10.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what quantity of wheat has been rejected from this year's wheat crop as unmillable.

The quantity of wheat from this year's crop which has been classified as unmillable is about 70,000 tons dried.

Could the Minister say what percentage that is?

I have not got the percentage but, up to date, the millers have taken in as millable wheat 526,000 tons.

That cannot be right.

I am sorry. I would have to work it out. I think it is about 30 per cent. unmillable. I have not got it in barrels.

Could the Minister give us the figure for barrels accepted as millable?

The amount taken in by the millers as millable is 280,000 tons.

And 70,000 tons rejected—about 20 per cent.

Is the 280,000 tons the total of the two?

It is 70,000 tons so far.

I quite appreciate that these figures may not be readily available to the Minister and I do not want to rush him into an unintentional inaccuracy, but that would suggest the total crop amounted to 350,000 tons, which seems a high figure. Perhaps, if the Minister has not the figure readily available to him now, he would be good enough to send us the figure later.

Perhaps one should not take these figures as accurate. I shall send them to the Deputy.

I am much obliged.
