Vol. 192 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gas Poisoning: Company's Obligations.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number of fatalities and cases requiring hospital treatment arising from gas poisoning (not self-inflicted) in the City of Dublin during the last five years; if the Gas Company on safety grounds are statutorily bound to inspect dwellings and places where people are employed or associate; if so, how often; and if he is satisfied that the requirements are carried out.

The official statistics relating to accidents from gas poisoning relate to fatal accidents for the country as a whole. I have been informed that the number of accidental deaths due to gas poisoning in the area served by the Dublin Gas Company in the last five years was:—

1957

8

1958

9

1959

1

1960

6

1961

(to date)

10

I have no definite information as to the number of cases necessitating hospital treatment but I understand that it would not exceed 6 per annum.

The Dublin Gas Company is under no statutory obligation to make routine inspections of gas installations but under the Gas Acts are responsible at law for the safety of their installations.
