Vol. 192 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Achill Jetty.

41.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will take the necessary steps to have a jetty erected at Darbys Point, Achill, so that it can be used at all times by fishing vessels which are now compelled to land their catches at Westport Quay, which is possible only when the tide reaches a certain height.

I understand that the facilities for landing catches at Westport have been found reasonably satisfactory. The question of alternative facilities is being kept under review but I am told that a useful jetty at Darbys Point would be quite costly.

Could the Minister say what draft would be available there?

Up to seven feet.

You might as well put a boat into a saucer.

The point is the facilities are available at Westport to facilitate the herring fishermen.

Then dredge the entrance to Westport.

How much fish do they catch there?

I understand it is the Donegal men catch them.
