Vol. 192 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Television Licence Duties.

56.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if all owners of television sets in this country will be liable to pay £4 licence duty after 1st January, 1962.

As from 1st January, 1962, every person in this country who holds a television set will be required to pay an annual licence fee of £4, irrespective of whether he owns the set.

Would the Minister consider it fair that people, say, in my constituency who have television sets should pay £4 for a service which they cannot receive? I believe the Mount Leinster booster station will not be ready and all they are able to get from the signals now is snow.

The fact is that the licence fee is applicable to the whole country from 1st January, 1962, and that decision was taken in the best interests of the television service.

Question No. 57.

Arising from the Minister's reply——

There are 98 questions and we have only reached No. 57.

A whole lot of people are going to be stuck.

Is the £4 licence fee payable in one instalment or more?
