Vol. 192 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grants for Mushroom Farms.

48.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if in view of the fact that generous grants are being made available for the establishment of industries generally, and in view of the considerable employment potential of mushroom growing, he will consider making similar grants available through his Department for the establishment and extension of existing mushroom farms.

I do not think that such a course would be justifiable.

Is the Minister aware that this industry produces almost entirely for export and should therefore be placed in the same position as other exporting industries?

It is heavily protected, of course.

In what way?

The home market is heavily protected.

But it is not merely the home market that arises in this case.

There is very substantial protection afforded to the industry.

What about the other industries that are protected?
