Vol. 192 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pensions.

45.

asked the Minister for Justice whether in view of the fact that Gardaí who retired before the option scheme came into operation in 1951 are very unfavourably placed as regards pensions in comparison with those who retired more recently he will consider reviewing the pensions paid to Gardaí who retired before 1951 with a view of raising them to a level comparable with those of more recently retired Gardaí.

The option scheme to which the Deputy refers provides for the award of a maximum pension of one-half of retirement pay and a gratuity. Members of the Force who retired before the scheme came into operation were entitled to receive a maximum pension of two-thirds of retirement pay without a gratuity. These ex-members in common with other State pensioners have received increases in the amount of their original pension awards under the provisions of the Pension (Increase) Acts, 1956, 1959 and 1960. Should there be a further revision of the pension awards to State pensioners generally, the claims of Garda pensioners will, of course, be considered.
