Vol. 192 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Brierfield (Ballinasloe) Untenanted Land.

2.

Mr. Donnellan

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that there are a number of holdings of land at Brierfield, Ballinasloe, County Galway, which have been untenanted and set on the eleven months system for the past few years; and if the Land Commission will have these lands inspected with a view to their acquisition and division amongst the large number of uneconomic holders in the vicinity.

I understand that a number of holdings in this townland have been noted by the Land Commission for early investigation.

Mr. Donnellan

The Minister will admit that quite a lot of holdings are vacant in the West of Ireland?

A scribe in a Sunday newspaper made that allegation last week, because of a question by the Deputy, and completely misinterpreted the facts. Five out of the six holdings mentioned by the Deputy were not vacated by migration but were vacated because the owners died.
