Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Limerick.

19.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the unemployment situation in Limerick which has been aggravated by the recent closing of Seaboard and Western Airlines at Shannon; and whether there are any proposals before his Department for the establishment of industries in the area, which would help to relieve the present situation.

While I fully appreciate the importance of providing increased employment opportunities at Limerick, I think it should be mentioned that the numbers of registered unemployed in the Limerick city area over the past six months show a reduction as compared with the corresponding period in the previous year.

I am aware of six industrial proposals in relation to the Limerick city area, of which two relate to extensions of existing firms. The total employment potential of these six projects is estimated at 700.
