Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Scheme.

14.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will make a detailed statement on the progress up to the present of the bovine tuberculosis eradication scheme in (a) County Cork, (b) Munster and (c) the country as a whole.

Taking the country as a whole, ten counties are at present attested and nine counties, which are at the Clearance Area stage, are expected to be attested by the end of 1962.

In Munster, Co. Clare is attested. In the other five Munster counties which, with Co. Kilkenny, constitute the southern dairying area, very considerable numbers of cow reactors have been removed under the scheme introduced in 1959 and this has reduced the incidence of the disease in those counties, including Cork. With the approach of attestation in a further nine counties outside the southern dairying area, I am considering the introduction of measures for the speeding up of eradication in that area.
