Vol. 193 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Exports to Japan and Far East.

19.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will seek markets for the export of surplus wheat in Japan and other Far Eastern countries so that it will be unnecessary to operate the levy on wheat grown in this country and so help the economy of tillage farmers.

20.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the shortage of wheat in the Far East; and if he will consider the possibility of having wheat grown in excess of the amount allowed by him of 280,000 tons, so that the extra wheat may be exported, thus obviating the need for reduction of wheat growing at an economic price.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 19 and 20 together.

Because of the price paid to growers in this country, and the cost of handling and drying, our price for dried wheat is very considerably above world prices, and it would not, therefore, be possible for us to sell wheat in the Far East, or elsewhere, except at a considerable loss.
