Vol. 193 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Barytes Deposits.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what were the results of any surveys made by the Geological Survey, or any other body, of deposits of barytes in the Cork South West area; and whether his Department contemplate taking any steps to encourage the mining of barytes in the area.

Detailed information relating to the deposits of barytes in the Cork South West area is contained in the Geological Survey Office publication entitled "Barytes in Ireland". This information is not in a form in which I could include it in this reply, but it is available at the Survey Office in Hume Street to all interested parties. It is also published in summary form in the Survey Office publication entitled "Memoir and Map of Localities of Minerals of Economic Importance and Metalliferous Mines in Ireland", which is available through the Government Publications Sale Office.

The exploitation of these deposits, to the extent to which they are commercially workable, is, of course, a matter for private enterprise under and in accordance with the necessary mining facilities under the Minerals Development Acts, 1940 and 1960. Within the past five years, two prospecting licences, one State mining permission and one State mining lease have been granted to facilitate the exploration and development of the deposits in the area.

Within the past year I have agreed to give two Technical Assistance grants towards the cost of schemes of exploration and development of the barytes deposits near Clonakilty and Bantry.
