Vol. 193 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Law Reform Proposals.

5.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Health whether any proposals of law reform are contemplated by him in relation to the work of his Department; and, if so, the nature of such proposals, and the probable date when legislation implementing them will be introduced.

The main body of law relating to the provision of health services dates back no further than 1947. Thus, law reform as such is not at the present time a significant issue in so far as health services are concerned.

There are some earlier laws in operation governing specific functions of the Minister for Health. My current legislative programme has included Bills providing for revision of some of these earlier laws. Such revisions have been made by the Poisons Act, 1961, and are proposed in the Pharmacy Bill and the State Lands (Workhouses) Bill which are at present before the Oireachtas. I would also draw the Deputy's attention to a reply given by me on the 22nd February to a question by him regarding the law on marriage.
