Vol. 193 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Television Reception in North Cork.

84.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs how television viewers in the North Cork area who receive the Kippure 405 line transmissions at present will be affected when transmissions commence from Mullaghanish on 625 lines.

When transmissions commence from Mullaghanish on 625 lines, viewers in the North Cork area who receive the Kippure 405 line transmissions at present will not be able to receive the Mullaghanish transmitter, unless they have their receivers adjusted for the reception of the 625 line standard transmissions. Provision for conversion has been made by manufactures in some sets of recent design but many receivers could not economically be converted.

When the Mullaghanish transmitter comes into operation, it is probable that the reception of Kippure in North Cork will be adversely affected, due to radiation from the local transmitter.

Viewers in this area are recommended not to purchase television sets unless they are suitable for the 625 line standard. Should they decide to buy receivers for the 405 line standard they should consult a radio dealer and ensure that the sets can be converted economically to the 625 line standard in order to receive the local station.

Prospective viewers should bear in mind that there are practical limits to what can be done to reduce electrical interferfence and viewers receiving weak signals from Kippure will, in general, be much more subject to interference from local electrical equipment than those who tune their sets to the Mullaghanish transmitter.

I assume that viewers within the Mount Leinster area will have the same difficulty with their sets.

I assume that they will.
