asked the Minister for Education what are the various headings under which children are detained in industrial schools; the number of children held under each heading; and the length of time for which each child is held.

Children are committed to industrial schools on the following grounds:— (1) destitution or lack of proper guardianship, (2) non-attendance at school, (3) uncontrollable and (4) indictable offences. The numbers under detention under these heads on 31st December, 1961, were:— destitution or lack of proper guardianship 3,216, non-attendance at school 134, uncontrollable 39, indictable offences 122.

The courts generally order detention to the age of 16 years.
