Vol. 195 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Near Dublin Airport.

24.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether buildings near Dublin Airport would be approved of by him of the same height and distance from runways as the residential flats near Shannon Airport.

The height and distance of obstructions from runways are not the only considerations governing building restrictions in the vicinity of airports. For instance, the directional relationship of the buildings is also a vital factor. In the circumstances I am unable to give a definitive reply to the Deputy's question. All proposals for the erection of buildings in the vicinity of airports on which my Department is consulted by the local authority are considered on their merits.

The residential flats near Shannon Airport to which the Deputy refers do not create an aeronautical hazard.

Mr. Ryan

Is the Minister aware that there is a very strong and, it appears, well-substantiated conviction that there is one law for Shannon and a different law for Dublin? It is felt that the people in North County Dublin have been penalised while the State has deliberately encouraged the building of high structures close to Shannon.

Conditions are entirely different. People have not been so penalised. The conditions in relation to the two airports are different.

Mr. Ryan

I know the positions are different, geographically speaking.
