Vol. 195 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Bodies: Restriction on Right to Strike.

28.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he intends to introduce legislation to restrict the individual's right in State or semi-State companies to withdraw labour.

As the Deputies are aware from previous statements, I have under review the existing legislation on industrial relations machinery and certain aspects of trade union legislation are also being examined.

Questions of withdrawal of labour, strike action and related matters inevitably arise out of the review of both codes, not alone in relation to employees in State or semi-State companies but in relation to employees generally.

I am not yet in a position to indicate what legislation, if any, will be proposed but it is my intention to have full consultation with employers' and workers' organisations on any such proposed legislation.

Can the Minister give the House any idea of how long it will take before there is a White Paper or legislation?

I am afraid I could not at this stage.

This year or this session?

Hardly this session, but it would be my desire—whether or not it would be practicable—to have it by the Autumn.
