Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Resurfacing of O'Connell Street, Dublin.

38.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government the cost of the resurfacing of O'Connell Street, Dublin, now about to commence; the contribution by the State towards the cost; and if, having regard to the desirability of reducing interference with traffic and business to a minimum, he will have a larger allocation made from State funds to cover the increased cost of more expeditious working.

The resurfacing of portion of O'Connell Street, Dublin, is being undertaken by the Dublin Corporation as part of a contract for the resurfacing of a number of city streets. Separate costings for each of the streets included in the contract are not available but, apportioned on the basis of surface area, the works to be undertaken in O'Connell Street will cost about £20,000. The timing and the organisation of the works are matters for the Corporation.

I am informed that the execution of this resurfacing in continuous shifts, day and night, is considered by the Corporation not to be practicable but I am not fully satisfied on this point and it is my intention to ask the Corporation to reconsider the matter with a view to expediting these and other works in city streets. It is also my intention to take up with the public service undertakers concerned with preliminary works on electricity, gas and post office installations the question of ensuring that such works interfere with traffic as little as possible and are carried out with the maximum speed.

The full cost of the resurfacing works will be met from the Road Fund.
