Vol. 195 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Land Allotment.

38.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will ascertain from the Land Commission why a very deserving applicant (name supplied) did not receive an allotment of the McAuley Estate, Tiergormley, Belturbet, County Cavan, in view of the fact that in order to provide for his wife and family he had to pay £35 per annum for additional grazing to supplement the twenty-two acres of his holding and that applicants in far better circumstances received allotments; and why applicants with more land, fewer to support and resident further from the estate concerned were selected.

I have ascertained from the Land Commission that the area available for disposal on this estate, viz. 72 acres, was utilised for the enlargement of seven local uneconomic holdings with Rateable Valuations ranging from £10 to £20 16s. The claims of all applicants—of whom there were 40—were fully considered by the Land Commissioners before the scheme of division was settled and operated. I understand the applicant mentioned in the Question at present enjoys the effective occupation of two holdings aggregating 46 acres with a Rateable Valuation of £26 8s.
