asked the Minister for Health the total births in each health authority area for which claims for payments were made under the Health Acts each year between 1951 and 1961; and the total still-births in each area noted on record cards supplied in connection with these claims.
Written Answer. - Maternity Cash Grants.

Section 23 of the Health Act, 1953, which provides for the payment of Maternity Cash Grants was brought into operation on 1st January, 1954. The total births in each health authority area for which claims for payment of grants were made from that date to 31st March, 1961, are given in the accompanying tabular statement.
The information regarding numbers of still-births sought by the Deputy is not available in my Department nor could it now be compiled by health authorities. Since 1st January, 1959, however, statistics of still-births amongst women availing themselves of services under Section 16 of the Health Act, 1953, are being kept. Details for the years 1959 and 1960 will be forwarded to the Deputy within the next few days.
