Vol. 196 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Quality of Beet Seed.

35.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that many acres of land sown with beet have had to be ploughed up as the seed did not grow; if any reports have been made to his Department in relation to defective beet seed; what he proposes to do about the matter; and if he has obtained the views of the Irish Sugar Company in relation to this very serious problem for beet growers.

I understand from the Irish Sugar Company that a limited acreage of beet had to be resown as weather conditions caused uneven germination of early sown seed and late sown crops suffered from drought. No reports have been made to my Department regarding defective seed.

Is the Minister aware whether this beet had to be resown because of the weather or was it that the seed was defective? Could the Minister say that there was no question of defective seed?
