Vol. 196 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Road Improvement Schemes.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the five year plan for roads improvement agreed on by Mayo County Council in 1960 was submitted to his Department for sanction, if that plan is now being carried out in accordance with the schemes submitted, having regard to the estimated cost of the works and the time agreed for carrying them out.

A copy of the 5-year plan for county road improvement which was approved by Mayo County Council in 1960 was submitted to my Department. The plan is not subject to my approval. The council's county road improvement grant schemes for the current year have not yet been submitted for approval. The roads dealt with under the grant in 1961/62 were taken from the plan, but due to increased costs the full extent of the improvement envisaged in the plan was not achieved in all cases. I should explain in regard to those county road plans, that, while councils are expected to devote their county road grant to the roads in their planned programme, the plan itself is not rigid. A council may, for example, vary the order of priority within the plan if they see fit to do so in particular cases. Again, progress with the plan will be affected if costs prove higher or lower than was estimated.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the total mileage of the road from Church Street, Belmullet, County Mayo, by Belmullet Secondary School to the Belmullet-Bangor Erris road at Bunnahowen, (b) the cost of carrying out and completing the improvement scheme including tar-spraying of this road, (c) the average cost per mile of such work, and (d) the average cost of such work per mile on similar roads in the Erris area in the year 1959-60.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the total overall mileage of the road from Muingmore, County Mayo, by the grass meal factory to Tristia at the Geesala-Bangor road, (b) the cost of carrying out and completing the improvement scheme since its commencement including the estimated cost of tar-spraying, (c) the average cost per mile of the work actual or estimated, and (d) the average cost of such work per mile on similar roads in the Erris area in the year 1959-60.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has any knowledge of the condition of the road between Foxford and Swinford in County Mayo; and what steps, if any, are being taken by Mayo County Council to improve this important road.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is correct that it was agreed by Mayo County Council in 1960-61 that a sum of approximately £15,000 would be spent on the Glengad-Pullathomas-Aughoose road in North Mayo in 1962-63: if this expenditure is to be made during that period; and, if not, why.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the mileage of road from Derrycoosh, Castlebar to Bellacorick improved in the past two years, (b) the total cost of such road improvements, (c) the average cost per mile, (d) the present condition of the road, and (e) the average cost per mile for the similar improvement of similar roads in 1959-60.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the mileage of road between Castlebar and Breaffy, County Mayo, which has been improved in the past two years, (b) the cost or estimated cost of the completion of such road improvement, (c) the average cost or estimated cost per mile of the completion of such work, and (d) the average cost per mile for similar work in 1959-60.
