Vol. 196 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workmen's Compensation: Wage Ceiling.

34.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether in view of the recent increases in wages and salaries he will raise the non-manual wage ceiling from £600 to £1,000 per annum in respect of compulsory insurance for workmen's compensation.

As indicated in reply to questions on the subject recently, the Report of the Commission on Workmen's Compensation, which covers this and various other aspects of the code, is at present under examination and until this examination is completed, it is not proposed to take steps for the introduction of amending legislation. Insurance for workmen's compensation is not compulsory at present.

Will the Minister say when he expects this examination will be completed?

I cannot say definitely but I hope to have it completed towards the end of this year.

And then, if necessary, the Minister will introduce amending legislation?

Then the question of amending legislation will have to be considered by the Government.
