The latest date for which complete returns of road mileages have been supplied to my Department by all road authorities is 31st March, 1961. The total mileage of main roads in the State at that date was 9,880.
(a) Total mileage of dust free county roads at 31st March, 1961, was 17,853.
(b) Total mileage of other county roads at 31st March, 1961, was 22,693.
The total number of mechanically propelled vehicles under current licence at the annual census date in August, 1960, was 302,767 and in August, 1961, was 326,641.
