asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in respect of 1961-62 the amount spent on, or allocated to, works from (a) local rates, (b) the road fund and (c) Exchequer grant, and the total expenditure on road works, expressing (a), (b) and (c) as a percentage of the total expenditure.

(a) The amount provided by road authorities out of local rates for expenditure on road works in 1961/62 was £4,970,277. (b) The aggregate of Road Fund Grant allocations to road authorities in 1961/62 out of the proceeds of motor taxation, licence fees, etc., was £6,626,962. (c) The amount allocated to the Road Fund from the Exchequer was £550,000.

The total of (a), (b) and (c) is £12,147,239 of which (a) amounts to 40.9 per cent., (b) amounts to 54.6 per cent. and (c) amounts to 4.5 per cent.
