Vol. 197 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Trunk Telephone System.

30.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the trunk telephone system from Waterford to Cork, Limerick and Dublin is most unsatisfactory; and if he will take steps to have this matter rectified.

The answer to the first part of the question is no. I am informed that at present there is a nodelay service between the places mentioned. There was congestion which gave rise to difficulties during peak traffic periods during the summer but some additional circuits have since been provided and more will be provided within the next few months. These should eliminate any remaining difficulties even during heavy traffic periods.

Does the telephone service lose a lot of money?

It does not lose any money. It makes money.

If you lost any money by it, would you close it down?

Surely that does not arise?

I want to try to put some sense into the Minister for Transport and Power. It is up to Ministers to give a public service.
