Vol. 197 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Radio and Television Reception.

55.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what steps are being taken to remove interference with both radio and television reception in the areas soon to be served by the new booster station at Truskmore, County Sligo, in view of the fact that numerous complaints have been made about the poor reception of both radio and television sets in Sligo town and the surrounding areas, and that it is feared that this interference may be magnified to a greater extent when the new station comes into operation.

It is not possible to remove all interference in any area. The most that can be hoped for is to reduce it to a level which will permit enjoyable reception of the Irish programmes. The signal strength from distant stations is usually below what is necessary for good reception even if an efficient set and aerial are used.

Radio Éireann has been given all powers appropriate for the investigation and detection of interference. I understand that the volume of complaints from the Sligo area is not abnormal and that in general owners of offending equipment co-operate with Radio Éireann in the suppression of undue interference. When the station at Truskmore opens reception of the Telefís Éireann programmes in the Sligo area will be much more reliable and satisfactory. Reception of radio programmes will not, of course, be affected by the Truskmore transmissions.

Will that be open before Christmas?

I expect so.
