Vol. 197 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Training College Students.

57.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state with regard to St. Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin (a) the number of first year students who passed the last first-year final examination and the number who failed, (b) with regard to the pupils who failed, the subjects in which they failed, (c) the number (if any) of students who, having failed, were subsequently recalled, although they had been notified that they could not be recalled, and (d) if any of the students referred to at (c) were recalled, the reasons for their recall, and the reasons why others who failed were not recalled.

In order to be recalled to the second year of training at St. Patrick's Training College a student must reach a standard at the first year examination which is acceptable to the Training College authorities and my Department and must be favourably recommended by the College authorities. Four of the 106 students at the first year examination in 1962 failed in two or more of the subjects English, History, Geography, Practice of Teaching and Hygiene and were in addition not given a favourable recommendation. These four students were not recalled. There was no case such as that referred to in (c) of the Deputy's question and (d) does not, therefore, arise.
